I am an American. I was born here.
My roots are mainly Irish, Swedish, and some German thrown in.
I was raised in the Midwestern U.S.,
where I still live now.
This qualifies me to have had and still have the
reactions and feelings I went through on 9-11-2001.
In addition, my time on this planet
includes having lived in Flushing/Queens/NYC.
My two sons were born there @ Booth Memorial.
I worked in Wall Street

I admit to my share of grief...
September 11 began like a lot of days. I retired in April - 2001, so I have a really flexible daily life. Just before 9 AM Central time, I turned on my television. I rarely do that at that hour. I'll always wonder why I did that on that day. The TV screen filled with an image of the tops of the two WTC towers - smoke pouring out of both of them. I clearly remember my brain/mind saying over and over, "What movie is this?" I though my TV was set on CNBC - where it usually is set. How could there be a movie on there? I could hear voices but I did not hear the words.
It took about thirty seconds for me to finally comprehend what I saw and what I heard the talking heads saying - and, of course, the continous rerunning of the images leading up to the fires in the buildings - those airplanes crashing in - over and over. It took me WEEKS to finally stop obsessing about the second airplane's image slicing into the south tower.
I started channel surfing. This disaster was everywhere - if a channel, any channel, wasn't covering it in some way, it was dark.
When we all saw the first tower fall, it looked like bombs were going off in the building as a part of the overall terrorist plot. This later proved to be wrong. The whole thing was just so surreal. In the fullness of time, reports now came on that the Pentagon had been hit. This is the time that I started feeling scared, afraid and fearful. I mean, people had crossed our borders, hijacked our civilian airplanes, turned them into guided missles and flew them into American buildings, killing innocent civilians - men, women, unborn children for God's sake. The acts left hundreds of spouses, children, brothers, sisters without their loved ones - to say nothing of the heroes of the NYPD, FDNY and the Port Authority police who lost their lives. It was an act of war - as President Bush eventually said. Where would it end? Who was next? Is there any place to hide?
I didn't leave the TV for 15 hours on 9-11...except for...well...absolutely necessary things...
I rarely left the TV until around the next Sunday. The one thing that did run me off during that period was my eventual inability to watch those loved ones come up to the cameras with pictures/posters looking for their missing loved ones. One news channel even carved out a block of time for people to come on camera with their posters. I kept losing it. I couldn't handle it. AND, I couldn't do anything to help but pray.
It was very satisfying to learn that a fourth airplane had been prevented from being used as a missle. It was tragic that no one survived the crash in Pennsylvania, but what happened there probably prevented an even bigger disaster if the plane had reached it's intended target - speculated to be the White House or the Capitol building in Washington, D. C.
I felt a lot of anger for a long time - and concern about what else was going to happen - if anything.
I felt a lot of comfort watching and listening to NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani. He had a real calming effect on me. I will always appreciate that.
We have delivered serious blows
to the Taliban. Saddam Hussein
is dead - executed. We are still fighting in Iraq as I write this - September 5 - 2009.
We have not yet captured Osama bin Laden...This bothers me that basically the strongest
country in the world hasn't found his butt yet. Maybe they're afraid that the
ENTIRE POPULATION of the USA wants a piece of him...

their loved-ones, the survivors, and America
