It was a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race Saturday - September 19 - 1998
Stacy Compton and his #86 Ford is who we rooted for. His sponsor, Royal Crown, was the source of our hospitality suite pass and 4 free tickets!!!
THANKS!!!
OUR OBSERVATIONS OF THE EXPERIENCE
My first time at a NASCAR-sanctioned event on a paved circle track. I have been to a bunch of dirt tracks, drag strips and county fairs - that sort of thing
Deciding what to wear to the race...LOL I kid you not... I own several t-shirts and hats, which ones??? I decided on the Schrader shirt and McGwire 62 HR baseball cap...cover all the bases, so to speak
Watching a race on TV will never be QUITE the same again
NASCAR decided to set a precedent and held the driver's and crew chief's meeting out in public under the grandstands. The track announcer was of the opinion that this was a first. Anyone know of this happening before? Everyone stood around waiting for Jack Sprague and Ron Hornaday to get into a fight!!! LOL ...But they decided to settle things out on the track.
There is such a rush involved at the start of the race when all the trucks are together, they all bury the gas at once and the NOISE is awesome. I wanted them to do it over and over!!! LOL
Deciding who/what to watch was a problem at the beginning, but I got into a rhythm of watching the leaders, or a specific driver, and standing up EVERY time I saw three-wide down the front into the first turn...it's very treacherous because it's very tight and if anything is going to happen it'll happen there...
Took binoculars - too powerful to see much - too fast speeds...ok to look at the press box and pit row...and other spectators...LOL
Camera got pix of:
Show cars #3 and #43
Scoring pylon - start, halfway, finish results - shows only top ten on this pylon
Starting grid before engine startup - this when all the trucks are parked diagonally on the front stretch for pre-race things and driver intros
Entrance to the track
Miscellaneous things
Here's one...
Going to a race under the "umbrella" of a sponsor gets you these perks:
Free breakfast, beverages, at the hospitality suite
Free tix - good ones - 24th row up and one section past the start/finish line - that would be about 20 feet
Free shuttle over the Mississippi River and to the track and back - no driving/parking hassles
Free parking for my car at the hotel garage
Watched poor Stacy Compton's #86 Royal Crown Ford finish 26th with engine probs - you could tell from the stands that his engine was SICK
Two surprises: food and drink prices at track UNREAL - $3 for a soda??? PLeeeeaaassee... But memorabilia, etc. very reasonable prices...
